Kyle Hawthorne is an Excitable Kite
"Meet The Character" - An interview series with the main characters from my novel The Source Of The Wind!
Hey everyone!
Today we’re continuing the mini series “Meet The Character”, where I interview the main characters from my upcoming novel “The Source of The Wind”!
If you haven’t read the interviews with the characters, Raphi Cohen and Jeremiah Knight, you can do so by clicking their names. Raphi is full of heart and Jeremiah is a force to be reckoned with.
Here we’ll be getting to know Jeremiah’s adorable and happy-go-lucky boyfriend, Kyle Hawthorne.
So let’s get to know him!
Ella: Hey Kyle, my name is Ella. How are you?
Kyle: Hey Ella, It’s nice to meet you! How are you?
E: I’m good, thanks. How are you?
K: I’m fantastic!
E: (laughs) I’m glad to hear that. Do you know why I’m reaching out to you?
K: If you’re the Ella who talked to Jeremiah, then I do!
E: (chuckles) Uh, yeah… That would be me.
K: (excited) Ooh! Okay, so I wanna make sure that I’m understanding this correctly - Me, Jeremiah, and Jeremiah’s best friend, Raphi, are all characters in a story you wrote? With Raphi being the main character?
E: Yes, that would be correct.
K: Oh. My. God. That is so COOL! Ooh! So that means that you know my future, right? I must ask then - should I go all in on my new business? Is Jeremiah the one? I feel that he is, but I’d love for you to tell me if I’m correct.
E: Kyle, I can't tell you those things.
K: But you know, right? ‘Cause you're our creator.
E: (chuckles) I suppose so, yes. But you have to live your life. Besides, while you are a beloved character, this is Raphi's story.
K: I know, I know. Okay, fine, I'll be patient. I'll try, at least. But this is so exciting!
E: I'm glad you think so!
K: I mean, I always felt that maybe there was something beyond just our regular human lives and physical reality. Some other consciousness that exists on a different plane, interacting with ours. But I never would have guessed that we’re all characters in a story!
E: Oh, well, I wouldn’t say that every single person in the world is a character in my story…
K: How freaking cool!
E: I have to say, you are responding to this much better than Jeremiah did.
K: (smiles) Jer Bear. He only believes in what he can see in front of him, and I love him for it.
E: It doesn’t bother you, that he sees the world differently than you do?
K: Of course not! He doesn’t always agree with me, but he respects me, y’know? And he accepts me, and shields me, and grounds me, and lets me be me. That’s all I’ve ever wanted and he gives me all of that and more!
E: I’m happy to hear that. So how is it going with Jeremiah?
K: Oh, as if you don’t know. (winks) And I guess I have you to thank for that!
E: (laughs) You’re right, and you’re welcome. I have to say, writing your scenes and exploring the dynamic between the two of you, was very fun. You guys serve as a huge inspiration to Raphi.
K: Oh, I’m so glad! Jeremiah talks about her non-stop. She sounds so awesome and I’m dying to meet her already.
E: You will love her. And she will love you too. You give both Jeremiah and Raphi so much genuine joy and inspiration.
K: Aww thank you for that compliment! And thanks for creating me this way. (winks)
E: (laughs) You’re welcome! So, we’ve talked a bit about your relationship with Jeremiah, and also your excitement to meet Raphi - do you want to share anything else? Maybe talk a bit about what you do for work?
K: Sure, although I don’t think my work is necessarily that interesting. At least, not to me. I work as a QA, testing code that developers create to see if there are any bugs that need fixing.
E: You said that you are running a business?
K: Yes! Now, that I find much more interesting. I’ve started a small business selling kombucha and I’m really enjoying the process of learning how to run a business that sells a physical product.
E: Could you describe to people what kombucha is and why you like it?
K: Sure! Kombucha is fermented tea that can come in different flavours and it’s good for the gut. I love it because it’s such a fun drink! It’s delightfully fizzy, very tasty and much better for you, than other fizzy, sweet drinks. You can customise the flavours
E: Sounds like you’ve found a passion!
K: Yeah! Which is why I have to know - will this business succeed?
E: Honestly, Kyle… I don’t know. I never really wrote too much about your work life in the story, so I can’t say for certain, even if I wanted to. But… I can say, that if you have a passion for something, it’s not for no reason. As the creator of Raphi’s story, and of you as a character - your passion is not for no reason.
K: Ooh! Okay, I’m going to interpret that as I should keep going and that I’m on the right path.
E: (chuckles) As long as you’re excited by it. So, I have one final question for you, although I think the answer is obvious. Ready to hear it?
K: Of course!
E: Cool. So, do you believe in magic? Or that there is some sort of magic helping us in our lives?
K: Ooh! I LOVE this question!
E: (laughs) I'm glad you like it!
K: It's a good question! And yes, I definitely do. I mean, how can I not? This world is full of unexplained, magical phenomena. Even the phenomena that can be easily explained, is still magical and beautiful. There are miracles to be found everywhere. Is it really that absurd to believe that all the beauty, goodness, synchronicity and serendipity is just random, and not a result of some magical source?
E: I love your perspective and I’m totally with you on that.
K: Why not see it that way, y’know?
